Villingen-Schwenningen. The two rescue parachutes PROTECT 38 + 42 now have a bigger brother: The PROTECT Duo has been designed as the rescue parachute for tandem pilots and their passengers. The PROTECT DUO has an area of 69,90 square meters with 36 tracks of material. The rescue system convinces with low sink rates, very fast opening times and high oscillation stability and is of course DHV certified. The low sink rate values, for example 5,8 m/s for a flight weight of 210 kilograms, are reached with innovative solutions. The PROTECT DUO has a mixture of materials of highly modern Nylon which is impermeable at the top region and 60% semi-permeable in the other regions. The asymmetric opening and the two inner lines provide the high oscillatory stability.

Finally the PROTECT DUO has a small auxilliary parachute which is connected to the inner container and which effectively supports a fast opening of the main rescue system. The DHV tests stipulate for example that the rescue system has to open within a vertical distance of 60 meters – this value is reduced by up to 30%, thanks to the special construction of the DUO. The high quality assurance during production garantees that this is the case for every single rescue system. Each PROTECT DUO is checked four times before it is delivered.

Nano Rescue

Rapid opening, thanks to the Rapid Inflation System (RIS), short measuring and light weight material, minimal sinking rates and broad weight ranges: These are the features of the three new Rescuers by U-Turn. The Protect Nano, the Protect ll RIS L and the Protect ll Ris XL, whose performance features exceed previous systems by far. This is made possible through a new quality fabric, called Paratex RS, that was developed in cooperation of U-Turn and Paratex, particularly for the use in rescue gliders. The Product is a tear-resistant Nylon fabric: with a weight of 40g per square meter it meets the requirement of tearing and tear strength while at the same time maintaining optimal porosity.

“We’ve been testing and re-testing for about 18 months, until we discovered the right fabric consistency”, says Ernst Strobl, chief developer at U-Turn. It took over 40 DHV testings and even more droptests in order to develop a material that is able to withstand all demands in all imaginable conditions. I turned out that a certain relation between warp and weft produces the best results, although simple and double incorporated were used for the Paratex RS. The double polyamide threads are weaved into the fabric. The outcome is a material that greatly satisfies the demands of rescue equipment.

The construction of the three new rescues is based on the proven Protect 38 and 42. This means: Due to the RIS you are guaranteed a very small opening time; the glider uses special bands which cause the canopy and the “basis” not to lie on top of one another but constitute exactly calculated input tension of the air duct. This positively affects the ampleness particularly in the first milliseconds. For the Protect Nano the RIS turned out to be obsolete as tests have shown that the system only generates advantages in opening times as of a certain canopy size.

The Protect Nano only weighs 1.5 kg, the projected surface is only 15 square meters. However the maximum pay load in accordance with DHV testing is still 6,8 m/s 128,2 kg. At a take off weight of 80 kg the sinking rate is 5,3 m/s. The Protect II RIS in size XL with a projected surface of 24 square meters brings whole 2,4 kg to the scale and in the DHV testing it holds 140 kg. Even at a pay load of 140 kg, the sinking rate is still only 6,1 m/s. To find the exact data for all rescuers please refer to the attachment titled: technical data.

More rescues will be on the market shortly: for motorized gliders, tandem pilots as well as a „remote controlled“ rescue. They all have in common that they are made out of the innovative material and that they are quality controlled. The processed fabric (warp and weft are inspected twice), all harnesses, lines and the sewing materials (tear- and tensile strength inspection) and of course the entire production process are observed at multiple stages. Each piece of rescue equipment is opened prior to packaging and checked for twists. The packaging process itself is documented and archived via video recordings.

The innovative rescue PROTECT (left photo: Genaral view of the opened inside container) opens even at low speed fast and sovereign, because special stripes (right foto: stripes in detail) guarantee optimised air circulation. Therefore the PROTECT opens as fast as a small canopy, but provides minimum sink rates as a big canopy.
